My son is 14 months old. For the past 2 and a half months he has had swollen glands but no other symptoms. My doctor kept telling me it was just a virus, i finally got her to do a blood test his first WBC was 19,000 than she said it must be a bacterial infection and put him on antibotics, took another CBC a week later and it was 15,000. They then send me to Detroit Childrens Hospital to see a blood disease specialist.... They did another CBC and his blood count went up to 16,500 and also a blood smear that showed a virus... i was just wondering if anyone knew what type of virus could last for this long? Please help im a new mother and need advise?
I have no idea but they need to really do something about that. High white blood cell counts are scary. If he's at a children's hospital, he's in the best hands that he can be in.
Good luck and while you're there. Take a look at the other kids and their situations and it will make you thank god that your son's problem is hopefully small and can be taken care of. I stayed at a children's hospital for a few days with my son when he was 4 weeks old. Too me, it was truly a life altering experience. Please help im a new mother and need advise?
That sounds like my same situation but my doctors won't even do a blood test on her. She has been sick every month it seems like since she was a month old. One doctor told me it was a virus and put her on antibiotics and another doctor told me there was nothing wrong. I can't give you good advice but all I can say is hang in there I know its stressfull.
yes being at a childrens hospital is better... but i know detroit.....
may i suggest you be more persistant... and as hard as it sounds, with swollen glands, continuing elevated white count... they might want to start cancer screenings...
again, i know does not sound good, but it would always be better to do the test to rule it out.. rather than it be the last thing they test for...
my family has history of cancer,, so we always check this first just to be on the safe side... so far it is always just a childhood virus.
but at least it gives us peace of mind...when the tests are negative...
