How would you go about finding a lawyer to advise on a divorce?

How expensive are lawyers? Are there low cost lawyers? Do you just call them up and ask to meet with them? Sorry, I know these sound like stupid, basic questions, but I need to know. . .How would you go about finding a lawyer to advise on a divorce?
Yes, Lawyers are expensive. Depending on where you live you can get some divorce lawyers for $50/hour to $400/hour.

You pay for what you get. While a cheap lawyer may seem like a bargain, there are some who ';pad'; on top of their bills so that you end up paying more than you would if you went with a mid-card lawyer.

Most offer a half hour or fifteen minute free consultation. You can find a lawyer in a phonebook or through people that have gone through divorce.

You can get a para-legal to act as your lawyer but they do not have the same expertise as a lawyer. Legal Aid might be of some assistance if it is available in your area and based on your income.

The cheapest is filing court papers yourself as long as it is an uncontested divorce. There are books in your library that would help you on the process or your local courthouse would help you.

There is a lot of time and if the other person does not have a lawyer that means YOUR lawyer will have to do extra work which means YOU end up paying for it unless you get a judgment for court costs. How would you go about finding a lawyer to advise on a divorce?
The only way to divorce, hon, is civilly. Use a mediating attorney. Get divorce papers from your county court house and see what is in them. Agree with your soon to be ex how your estate, --- whatever it includes--- ought to be divided. If you own nothing, all the blanks will be filled with the null set sign. You can do that, turn it in, and with a filing fee, your divorce will be settled. If there are children involved and $$, then have a mediating attorney do it... look under attorneys.-- mediating -- divorce. The charge anywhere from $75-300. The less time he spends doing this for you, the cheaper. At all costs you wish never to have one attorney represent you and a second represent your spouse... read $5000 each, minimum....

Helpful??
Ask your friends for referrals. They usually know someone who divorced, and can give advice on who to use - and who to avoid.
